A butcher’s lunch menu, always up to date

Metzgerei Rust is a butcher’s shop in Neu St. Johann with a bistro, take-away and a 24h self-service shop. Together with a partner agency we designed and developed its website — and built the chef’s daily recommendation and the weekly menu: entered once in WordPress, shown on the right day.

The brief

Counter, bistro and a menu that changes daily

Metzgerei Rust GmbH is a butcher’s shop in Neu St. Johann in the Toggenburg. Its new store in the village centre brings together the meat counter, a bistro with take-away and a lunch menu, a self-service 24h shop and an online shop for meat and sausage specialities.

The website had to present all of this and keep the lunch menu current without daily page edits: each menu day is entered once and appears on the right day. We did the design and development in cooperation with a partner agency; the menu functionality is our own plugin.

The challenge

A menu that changes from day to day

A butcher’s lunch menu brings a new dish almost every day, and the team plans it weeks ahead. The website had to show the right menu on the right day — on the home page and on the menu page.

Around it, the site had to carry the rest of the business, from the counter to the online shop — designed and developed together with a partner agency.

  • A new dish almost every day

Each menu day has its own dish, extras and prices, and new days are entered weeks before they are served.

  • One entry, two places

The same menu appears as today’s recommendation on the home page and in the list of coming days — both must always agree.

  • Four offers on one site

Meat counter, bistro and take-away, a self-service 24h shop and an online shop each needed their own place on one website.

Behind the build

From set-up to the first menu week

The set-up of WordPress and the shop started in mid-October 2025. The menu plugin followed in November, and the first menus were entered a month before they were served, in the second week of December. All work ran in cooperation with the partner agency.

What we built

Four parts, one menu at the centre

Chef’s daily recommendation

Today’s dish on the home page — every day

Under the heading “Tagesempfehlung des Küchenchefs”, the home page shows the menu of the day: image, serving time, price and the meal lines with extras. It picks the entry for today’s date by itself, and a button leads on to the full weekly menu.

  • Entry for today chosen by date
  • Live badge while the menu is served
  • Button to the weekly menu
Bereich «Tagesempfehlung des Küchenchefs» auf der Startseite mit dem Menü des Tages

Weekly menu

The coming days, in date order

The page “Menüs der Woche” lists the coming menu days, each as a card with banner image, date and serving time, a price badge and the meal lines. Today’s card comes first; days without a menu simply do not appear.

  • One card per menu day
  • Days without a menu left out
  • Same card as on the home page

Take-away & bistro

Bistro and take-away, linked to the menu

Designed and built with the partner agency: the Take-away & 24h-Shop page explains the bistro, the take-away and the self-service shop, and a band on the home page — “Jeden Tag ein neues Menü” — leads straight to the weekly menu.

  • Own page for take-away and the 24h shop
  • Menu band with a button on the home page
  • “Wochenmenü” in the main navigation

Online shop

Meat specialities to order online

Also built in cooperation: 32 products in 7 categories, with weight options, a category accordion, a price filter, a wishlist and a cart panel. A mega menu in the main navigation groups fresh meat, charcuterie and offers.

  • Products with weight options
  • Category accordion and price filter
  • Mega menu for the shop categories

Let’s build your next platform

Tell us what you sell and who you sell to. We come back with a clear scope, a realistic timeline and an estimate — and one team that owns the whole thing from the first call to launch.

Inside the project

Every step of the work, out in the open

Most agencies show you the finished site. We show you how it got there. Open any discipline to see what the team did and what it handed over.

01 / Project management

One point of contact, the whole way through

The project came to us through a partner agency, which also looks after the site today. We worked as its design and development team — from the first set-up in October 2025 to the first menu week in December.

What we did

  • Work coordinated through the partner agency
  • Menu feature planned as a plugin of its own
  • First menus in place before launch
  • Site handed over to the partner agency

Below the surface

The work behind today’s menu

Visitors see a dish, a serving time and a price. Behind them sits a small plugin that keeps the menu in step with the calendar.

  • Development

Menus as their own content type

Each menu day is an entry in “Menüs” — dish, serving time, price and meal lines — so nobody has to edit a page to change the menu.

  • Development

    Today’s entry, picked by date

The home page finds the entry dated today and shows it as the chef’s recommendation; the menu page lists the days that follow.

  • Development

A badge that follows the clock

While the menu is served, today’s card shows a pulsing “Jetzt verfügbar” badge — set by the plugin each time the page is requested.

  • Development

No extra script in the browser

Cards and badges are rendered in PHP on the server — the plugin’s front-end script is empty, so the menu shows up even without JavaScript.

  • Development

    Re-dating instead of retyping

An earlier menu can get a new date and appear again — many entries first written for winter days now carry autumn dates.

  • Design

    One card for both places

Home page and menu page use the same card — banner image, time label, round price badge and the meal lines below.

  • Design

    Menu cards on small screens

Layout and type sizes of the menu card adapt at four breakpoints, from tablet down to phone width.

  • Management

    Menus in place before launch

The menus for the first two menu weeks were entered about a month ahead, so the feature started with real dishes.

What you can expect

A platform that keeps earning its place

We build for the things that last — a platform that is clearer to navigate, more credible to every visitor and genuinely easier for your team to run and grow.

  • Easier to choose

Clear categories, filters and prices let visitors find the right offer themselves instead of writing to ask where to begin.

  • Credible to every visitor

A site that looks and reads like the quality behind it — for first-time visitors and long-standing customers alike.

  • Effortless to keep current

Your team updates products, content and news itself — no developer ticket, no waiting in a queue.

  • Built to grow

New products, categories and languages slot in as the business expands — without a rebuild.

Built on a clear goal

We agree the goals that matter up front and build toward them together — then stay on as a partner after launch to keep the platform sharp as the business grows.

In their words

What the client says

A menu feature proves itself when the people who fill it every week would not want to go back.

  • We enter the lunch menu once, and the website shows it on the right day — as today’s recommendation on the home page and in the list for the days ahead.
